Van Gogh Sky
Vincent van Gogh (March 30 1853-July 29, 1890) was a little known or appreciated Dutch post-Impressionist painter who died young from a gunshot wound at the age of 37. Following memorial and retrospective exhibitions in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s his fame grew amongst colleagues, art critics, dealers and collectors. Some of Van Gogh’s works are now among the world’s most expensive paintings ever sold. His paintings, full of emotional honesty, are known for use of bold, heavily applied colors, and his depictions of the landscapes and people of the Netherlands and France are beloved the world over.
Deeply devout in adolescence his religious zeal predisposed him to experiment with the priesthood. Like Francis of Assisi, his decision to live in the style of the poorest of his parishioner’s lead to his dismissal by church authorities for undermining the dignity of the priesthood. Reoccurring bouts of mental anguish, abuse of absinthe, excessive smoking and poor diet led to periods of ill health, despair and admissions to asylums and institutions. His relationship with his brother Theo was the grace note and sounding board of Vincent’s life and the well documented and articulate correspondence between the brothers, reveal a deep, loving bond.
